Kuvaus: The life of a happy, close-knit French family from Aisne who must flee the German advance in 1914. The father and uncle must join the front. To keep the women and children safe, the American committee organizes their exodus to the South of France, and they must say goodbye to the grandfather and their neighbor Jeanne, who refuse to evacuate their houses. When the family reaches its staying place, they pray for those in the trenches and for the prisoners. Meanwhile, the war rages across the country, where a new enemy, the airplane, destroys villages and ravages the countryside. When the fighting ends, the repatriated women and children discover a field of ruins. It is now time for reconstruction, and the American committee will help them, first in finding a house and supplies, then with de-mining the fields so they can sow them once again. The grandfather and Jeanne finally return from captivity. Then the father and uncle rejoin the family. Jacques, who is wounded, has become blind, but Jeanne, who has waited for him for so long, will marry him. Peace and happiness seem to be within reach again. On July 14, 1919, in Coucy, the American committee organizes the first celebration in five years.
